Meisner Meets Improv

“To be an interesting actor – hell, to be an interesting human being – you must be authentic and for you to be authentic you must embrace who you really are, warts and all. Do you have any idea how liberating it is to not care what people think about you? Well, that's what we're here to do.”

— Sanford Meisner

Meisner Meets Improv

This Meisner Meets Improv Workshop will help you tune into your gut reactions, observations and emotions in the service of spontaneous emotional authenticity, connection, and self-discovery.

Whether you have improv/acting experience or not, this workshop is a fun, engaging way to practice thinking on your feet, tuning into your gut reactions, and connecting with others in a safe, accepting environment.

Discover Meisner tools that will inspire:

  • honest spontaneity

  • in-the-moment vulnerability

  • interpersonal connection

  • access to changing emotional states

  • gut reactions

What is Meisner?

Meisner exercises help students develop an ability to first improvise, then to access an emotional life, and finally to bring the spontaneity of improvisation and the richness of personal response to interactions on (and in our opinion, off) stage.

What is Improv?

Improv is the art of making things up as you go along. It is based in principles that help performers work together to keep the "flow" of a scene going and promotes strategies that facilitate mutual, in-the-moment creativity and support as well as radical acceptance of self, others and the moment.

DAY 1

A synthesis of The Meisner Technique and improvisational theater, this workshop first guides students through improv-based trust-building exercises.

Next, we’ll do Meisner-based physical and repetition exercises that turn off your “planning brain” and turn on truthful behavior.

DAY 2

The second day begins with a series of improv-based warm-ups to help students “get out of their heads” and reconnect with the group.

Students revisit Meisner exercises to broaden skills and further practice, then dive deep into synthesizing the skills learned during exercises with improvised scene work.
